Nervous about your first Boxing class? Don't be. Every coach has seen a thousand first-timers. Here's exactly what to wear, what happens during class, and what to do.

What to wear

Athletic shorts or sweatpants, a t-shirt, and athletic shoes (not running shoes — wrestling shoes or flat boxing shoes are ideal but any flat-soled shoe works). Bring hand wraps; most gyms will lend you 14–16oz gloves and a jump rope for trial classes. A small towel is useful for the heavy bag area.

What happens during a typical Boxing class

Boxing classes in commercial gyms vary widely — from fitness-style group classes built around the bag to old-school boxing-gym sessions modeled on a fighter's training day. Either way, expect serious cardio.

A classic boxing class starts with jump rope (3–5 rounds) and shadowboxing (3 rounds) — both build the rhythm and footwork everything else depends on. From there, you'll get technique instruction: stance, the basic four punches (jab, cross, hook, uppercut), head movement (slip, roll, weave), and defensive footwork.

The heart of class is the heavy bag and pad work. You'll move between bags, mitts with a coach or partner, and double-end bags or speed bags. Rounds are typically 3 minutes with 30–60 second breaks — the timer dictates the entire session. New students usually do 2–3 rounds of each station, with progressive intensity.

Many boxing gyms close with conditioning — pull-ups, push-ups, core, neck work. You won't spar on your first class; most coaches won't let you spar for at least 6–8 weeks while they assess your defensive habits. That's a good thing. Boxing is one of the most contact-heavy sports and bad sparring habits cause real injury.

Boxing gym etiquette

  1. Touch gloves before and after a round, whether it's sparring or pad work. It's a sign of respect.
  2. Don't talk during rounds. The bell means work; the break means talk.
  3. Don't horseplay near the bags. People are throwing power shots.
  4. Wash your hand wraps after every session and let your gloves air out — funky gloves are a hygiene problem.
  5. Listen to your coach without negotiating. Boxing instruction is direct and not personal.
